Mostly Fish

An online encyclopedia of reef fish and other reef creatures

On this site, Karyn and I have created a catalog of photos we’ve taken over the last 12 years. Most of these photos are of fish or marine creatures. The photos were taken while snorkeling, using small Olympus cameras without any artificial light.  (We do use hand-held flashlights when we go night snorkeling, however).

In some ways, this web site is an online encyclopedia of reef fish (and other reef creatures). Over 1,800 species are listed.

On each page, species are listed alphabetically by common name. For those who want to locate a species by scientific name, follow this procedure:

  1. Type the scientific name in the search box. The results of your search will appear below the horizontal black bar on this page; each result will be a page title. There may be no results, one result, or many results. Each result will be a link to a new page.
  2. Click each of the links resulting from your search.
  3. After clicking one of the links, use the “find” feature on your computer or smart phone (control-F on a Windows computer, or Command-F on an Apple computer). To use this feature, you’ll have to re-enter the scientific name in the “find” box.
  4. The Find feature should bring you to the right photo caption, with the relevant words highlighted. Note that there may be several photos of the same species on any given page.
